Most Embarrassing Moment: In middle school, I had
a crush on a guy in my class. One day, when I was home cleaning, I drew his full name in a heart inside my closet wall. The
following year, we sold the house and moved to Florida and I forgot about it. About six years later, I returned to town to
visit a friend of mine. She tells me that this guy is home for the summer and she's going take me by his house to drop in
and say hello. To tell the truth, that alone was embarrassing enough. So I'm at his house catching up, having a good conversation
with his family when his little sister turns to me and asks, "Did you used to live over in that house by the lake?" I, ever
so innocently, say, "Yes, I did." Then she says, "I thought so, because a friend of mine bought that old house…" Here
it comes: "My friend said that in the closet of her bedroom was a heart with my brother's name in it." There I was, red faced
and mortified, in front, the guy I had the crush on, his parents, his sister and my friend. Though I felt like crawling –
no, RUNNING – from the house at that moment, I somehow managed to joke it off and laughed about it instead.
Coolest
Thing You've Ever Done: In 1995, when I was 19, I backpacked through Europe with a few of my cousins for a month and
a half. We visited Amsterdam, Paris, Lourdes, Nice, Naples, Rome and Capri. This past winter, I was given the chance to go
overseas again on a two-week vacation. I got to see London for the first time and spent time learning to ski in the Italian
Alps that was the most INCREDIBLE feeling ever. I also experienced Venice for the first time that not only was amazing but
made a lifelong dream come true.
What is your idea of a perfect day? I absolutely love a gloomy, warm-rainy
day. I stay inside, drink hot tea, read, write in my journal, write poetry or a song, or maybe take a walk in the rain. Most
of all, I love sitting in front of rain streamed glass doors with my art supplies in front of me on the floor, some Etta James
or Fiona Apple playing in the background -depending on my mood- some candles and incense lit, a hot cup of Lipton tea next
to me. I can then dive into a picture or a painting. I think that my creativity blooms in the rain.
Most Humbling
Moment: I have humbling moments all the time, but I guess I feel most humbled when I watch how my life is unfolding
- when I see all of our hard work coming to fruition and the unexpected blessings and opportunities that arise (ones I don’t
think usually happen to new groups starting out there struggling).
What do you do to stay fit? For aerobics,
I swim. I can exercise in the ocean or a pool for hours. Next to that, I love rollerblading and most recently, bicycling while
I listen to my CD player. I also do yoga and meditate for a mellow workout. For fun, I do my "Britney belly" sit-ups everyday!
What makes you smile? Thunderstorms, a massage, sunsets, full moons, sunrises over the ocean, my beach,
little kids on planes headed for Disney, new born kittens and my grown talking cats, starting a picture from scratch, CREATING
ANYTHING – from a good painting to a good piece of writing to cooking a delicious meal, eating whipped cream from the
can, spinning on the beach, sitting under an umbrella in the rain, lying in hammocks, quoting movies I've seen a million times
along with my sisters, watching cable access with my sisters when we're on the road, finding a gem of a bad movie on television
to make fun of, learning all the lyrics to a hysterically bad song, making adult baby books for my family, retelling and hearing
dreams along with their interpretations, keeping a combined journal with my best friend all these years, dressing up for Halloween,
Autumn, having a fire and a glass of wine with my loved one when I come home after a trip to catch up, coming home…
Crossing the south bridge to Beachside really makes me smile. Also – never fails – a cup of hot tea, an aromatherapy
bath and candles always brings a smile to my face. Anytime I go on our message board I'm bound to smile because the love and
energy people put out there to write us an encouraging message just fills my spirit with endless joy. Thank you all!
If
you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I'm pretty much stuck with what God gave me, so I've learned
to be happy with myself, physically. As far as traits go, I wish I were able to be more organized and maintain order and cleanliness
in my house all of the time. I also strive to be more balanced, peaceful and stress-free being who no longer has bad habits,
anxiety or stress-related pain.
What advice would you give people your age about having a singing career? In
all honesty, I am pleasantly surprised that in this "youth market" at my age I am given the opportunity to break into the
business. Let's face it, most people in their late 20's are already settling into a career. But if music is the absolute only
thing you can see yourself doing at age 27, then I seriously suggest outlining your goals and prioritizing. Concentrated focus,
determination, preparation (spiritually, physically and mentally) and fine-tuning your craft also help a whole lot. I believe
"today's preparation determines tomorrow’s achievement," "A positive attitude = Positive results," and "To succeed –
Do the best you can where you are with what you have." Break a leg!
Whom do you most admire? I'd have to
say I admire my mother most. I'd have to say that out of all the women I know, I am constantly amazed by her strength, her
knowledge, faith, hope, wisdom and sense of humor. She is one of the most honest people I know and she is always one to apologize
when she is wrong. With all her kids and the responsibility that goes along with raising us (alone), I am amazed at how she
stays afloat. She inspires me daily. I also really admire my sister Christie for her strength, courage, talents and drive
she exudes. She is a workhorse and doesn't stop when we're on a roll – whether it be writing a song or arranging harmonies
or working in the studio. I can always count on her to keep me going to get the best end product possible. Musically, I think
she is genius and when we are on stage, in a writing session or in the studio – I draw from her ability. She makes me
feel like, if she can do it, I can do it and I am inspired to work harder in her presence. She's like a big sister trapped
in a little sister's body. I'd also like to add that it takes a lot of guts, energy and strength to be a woman in the music
industry and I admire every single woman out there for tackling this business, for not being ashamed of being women for getting
out there in spite of any gossip, bad publicity, and/or jealous people and proving that women are just as capable, talented,
inventive, intelligent and business-minded as the men.
